How to Select the Right 4th Grade Spelling Words
How to Select the Right 4th Grade Spelling Words + Spelling Activities
Spelling words for 4th graders should be challenging enough to help your student grow but not so difficult that your student gets frustrated or overwhelmed. For this reason, we have selected words commonly found in 4th grade reading to become part of our spelling lists. You can choose our lists to import by becoming a member of Home Spelling Words, or you can create your own 4th grade spelling lists.
How to Choose Spelling Words for 4th Grade
One of the best ways to select spelling words for 4th grade spelling lists is to use the books your student uses. If you are homeschooling, you can take books from this year and select words from these books. They don't just have to be stories, either. You can choose words from their math, science, social studies, or other books that positively contribute to your child's learning. You could enlist the help of your student by asking them to find ten words per book that they think would make a good spelling word. Consider words that might double as vocabulary so your list can do double duty.

Providing worksheets of your spelling lists will give your student some hands-on activities and allows them to practice various mental skills and even some handwriting. Worksheets are fun spelling activities for 4th graders.
Our 4th Grade Spelling Games Make Learning Fun
Your student doesn't have to write their words five times to learn them. They can play fun games instead! We've found that students who play at least three games a week plus practice at least once generally see improvements in spelling test scores. Our spelling games provide the student with an optimal amount of word exposure, and in many cases, the game is the reward for spelling correctly. A variety of games provides an incentive for the student to continue playing. One of our top-rated spelling games for 4th graders is Bink Bonk.
Create 4th Grade Spelling Bee Words / Lists Too
Home Spelling Words is a flexible program to help you create 4th grade spelling bee lists. You can use our lists and then add additional lists, or if you are getting spelling bee words from school, you can add those to your account. We recommend creating lists of twenty to thirty words to work through to keep lists in "bite-sized" chunks. Once your student knows the first set, you can quickly jump to the next group.
Spelling Activities for Gifted Students
If your student is gifted, consider making lists above grade level or import our 5th grade spelling lists instead of 4th grade. You can import more than one grade at a time too. If your student is not being challenged, add some challenge words to each list. For 4th graders, usually, twenty to thirty spelling words are common. You can make five or ten of those words "challenge words" or interesting vocabulary words. Use practice sentences to help your student understand how that word is used in a sentence.
